Redding Homeless Coalition - Why We Fight

The cold  razor sharp sobering reality of street life as a homeless individual is frightening.
I shudder thinking or mentally walking in their shoes , but to be sure nothing I phantom compares to their day after day reality.

Many ask me with a blank stare as I walk through their reality, "Who is fighting for us?

Walk a little deeper, love them a little more and soon the layers peel back and you discover Redding's rejected humanity pushed to the edge of the Sacramento river spiritually is like the Hebrews of the biblical exodus with their backs to the red sea.

Time for the Parkview tent camp is running out, What will God do ?

Veterans make up a surprisingly large number of Redding's homeless population. Unfortunately so many of them were exposed to an enemy far more insidious that followed so many of them home.

Can I say it without compromising the dignity and privacy of one example of many in Redding and Shasta County?

Agent orange .... Insidious... Back up against the river by a city that wants to make your remaining days miserable, Unacceptable.

Have I said it without saying it?

So if you can, please stop by Reddings Parkview tent camp and ask for Richard. Love offerings of food and other comforts would be greatly appreciated.


Why we fight ?  Just look for the homeless combat Veterans tent with the American flag...

"Camp Carr" - City of Redding California Camp Fire / Carr Fire Homeless Survival Tent City

Although picture was taken during middle of the day, Camp Carr's population doubles at night

Whether City of Redding or its Police like it or not, due to a timely recent Federal judge court ruling on the treatment of homeless virtually has stopped the "cruel and unusual punishment" of those without shelter, prohibiting RPD from writing tickets criminalizing sleeping or keeping warm by a survival fire.

A tent city is forming in Redding at the Parkview park and trail on the banks of the Sacramento river.

Timely indeed due to so many recently displaced victims of the Shasta County Carr and the Paradise Camp fire of Butte County, near Chico California. 

Out of complete and total necessity Redding's "CampCarr" has formed.

Unfortunately drinking fountains and park benches were removed some time ago in an effort by City of Redding officials to prevent everyday living and life sustaining activities of others less fortunate in the past.

Redding California Survival Camp Carr area looks very well maintained, has porta potties, close to homeless services, and plenty of room for others.

*We ask that for the SAFETY of families, women and children staying there that you consider donating Coleman type battery operated camping lanterns, flashlights and extra batteries.

Please drop your donations off for Camp Carr with Mr Morgan, Just look for the 8 year veterans tent displaying American flag, he will see that they are evenly distributed.

"As the county's only shelter, the mission is scarcely equipped to handle its homeless population, said Community Relations Director Ken White.

"We're feeling extraordinarily overwhelmed by the amount of services needed by people in the community," he said. "If the economy worsens, or even stays as it's been, that could be a very at-risk population as a community I don't feel like we're very prepared to service at this point."

The mission has only about 120 beds, he said, but because staff members try to help everyone they can, up to 70 extra guests at a time often sleep on the chapel floor.

"There's a huge need," he said.

And the mission's 30-day time limit means it's hardly a solution to Redding's homelessness situation, he said.

"The goal is, we want to be an emergency service," he said.

"We're not a long-term shelter."

It is expected after Redding City Council meeting last night  Parkview Tent City homeless will be able to stay tentatively until sometime in February !

City of Redding Police Criminalizes Tribulation, Natural Disasters, and it's Homeless

Dear City of Redding Attorney...

Civil rights attorneys from Washington DC instrumental in the no child left behind legislation are VERY INTERESTED in your online flyer you must have given the OK to produce.

To equate that maintaining homeless civil and constitutional rights (especially homeless veterans) will result in loss of police and fire services is in my opinion an embarrassment to the Redding community in which you serve, and an unwarranted diabolic triangulation of fear created by you and the City of Redding from within. 

The compassionate Idaho court decision on homeless sleeping is rather timely considering we have had 20 or more thousand people displaced by our own Carr Fire here in Shasta County and 50 thousand people displaced by Camp fire an hour and half away from us south  wiping out the entire town of Paradise and surrounding communities in Butte county near Chico California.

Even more so as fire officials declare never before seen intensities of never before seen home destroying devastating wildfires will now be the year round normal.

Going to ticket them for sitting or laying down? sleeping, keeping warm by a fire?

Should a police officer decide who is worthy of these discretionary laws and penalties and who is not? Lady liberty blindfolded ? Penalize one penalize them all? Perhaps your officers dont like the way a homeless man parts his hair? 

Perhaps your officers should stick with the black SS storm troopers uniforms and forget about wearing the judges black robe as well?

I dont believe Redding police officers that refuse to wear body cameras can be trusted with such power, and I believe past events prove me correct.

But troubling is the fact that it appears the city is looking for ways to even further criminalize the homeless population here in Redding California. Current law has a 1000 dollar and or 6 months in jail for the crime of sleeping AND OR keeping warm by a fire. With one homeless Good News Rescue Mission with a 30 day in 30 day out policy serving several counties with NO OTHER NIGHT TIME HOMELESS FACILITIES.  A "Gospel Rescue Mission" that insists on pushing the religious "Rapture Fly Away" doctrine found nowhere in the scriptures.

Cruel and unusual punishment this winter for homeless Carr fire and Camp fire survivors indeed...

Many Christians know what time it is and feel opposite of your belief Redding Police Department that "The federal court decision is frustrating to all of us" ...

"Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

Reality is that court decision is a timely compassionate gift from God to His "least of the brethren."

Why would ANY Christian be in favor of practices and laws that unfairly single out homeless people and criminalize them for everyday living and life-sustaining activities? Homeless advocates, please attend the Redding city council meeting this December as they revisit the no homeless camping / sleeping law.


“The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field;  but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared  So the servants of the owner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The servants said to him, ‘Do you want us then to go and gather them up?’ But he said, ‘No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them  Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.”

Redding Record Searchlight, Politics & Death

At a recent city wide so called Safe City Project , with its leader April LaFrance , and interesting admonition was made, and Tweeted by a Redding Record Searchlight Reporter.

With the Good News Rescue Mission being the ONLY nightime rescue mission shelter in all of Redding and Shasta County California this fact, if reported... this crucial Tweet... if turned into a news story would rally the generous and caring community Redding has become, and positive steps surely would be taken that would change the dynamics of homelessness in our community, and quite possibly SAVE LIVES.

Not only that, If the facts and truth were released, to be ticketed by Redding Police Chief Robert Paoletti and his department for homeless sleeping now would be more than ever a very real violation of homeless persons civil and constitutional rights.

A situation here in Redding already determined to be cruel and unusual punishment in other California cities  by a Judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Needless to say, in those cities positive changes were made, services added, lives saved....

Indeed one would think the Record Searchlight  /  Redding.com as a whole would be interested in the health, safety, and well being of our local homeless families, children, and veterans.

With temperatures that can dip to single digits in the winter here you would like to believe there is a news reporter somehow, somewhere with the courage and compassion to report on this crucial Tweet information.

Redding California Police release map of known homeless camps at a city wide Redding Convention Center safety meeting ( #SafeRedding ) after Redding city council person Missy McArthur receives messages from vigilantes wanting to go out into the homeless camps and send them a message with baseball bats.

Im getting calls, emails, and on – the street comments about this No.1 issue. Things like : “Let’s take some bats and show transients we don’t want them here.”

Redding California Homeless - Keep um moving...

It appears this Christmas season the holiday sentiments  "peace on earth goodwill towards men" we wish to one another does not include our everyday neighbors the poor and homeless we see languishing up and down our streets as if trapped in some kind of modern day World War 2 Bataan "forced" death march.

Of course the American Indians and how we "forced" them down far more than one trail of tears as well also comes to mind, a form of torture to be sure.

What a shame on the streets of Redding their poor and homeless are treated just shy of how we treat captured enemy combatants on the streets of Fallujah Iraq.

Indeed the Iraqi combatants would receive food and water and shelter. As for Redding and that matter California's growing homeless Families, Veterans, Men, Women and Children...?

We have another phrase Americans hold dear, "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

Unfortunately forced marchers weary of torture and sub freezing temperatures, and loss of necessary survival gear die.  From Redding City Council communications to Redding Police and its Army Reserve Police Chief Robert Paoletti , orders appear and seem abundantly clear and to be carried out at no matter what the cost.

Redding California - Neglected past - neglected people

This is the Wells Fargo Depot that still stands on Yuba St. in downtown Redding near the railroad tracks across the street from the Redding California Veterans "Memorial Building" and the downtown Post Office. This photo was taken in approximately 1913.

The Wells Fargo Depot today stands in jeopardy of being demolished by Union Pacific which owns the property and wants to demolish it.  The City of Redding seems to have no interest  in saving it and seem interested in maintaining a "history" as well.

A history of destruction concerning dozens of historic buildings during the downtown mall construction, as well as the destruction of hundreds of homeless camps, and their irreplaceable personal possessions.

In a world where it is against the law for certain folks to sit or lay down or sleep or keep warm by a campfire it is quite natural for the City of Redding to strongly desire to tear down this monument to a compassionless Tea Party majority Redding City Council who's mayor defines one of their major duties to the community they serve and care for is to "sell services".

Tony, a homeless man who has spent day and night during Redding's exceptionally cold winter outdoors outside the depot.


With brush and low hanging branches of homeless shelter refuges being cut from one end of town to the other homeless have no other alternative than to be driven out into the streets to find shelter anyway possible.

Redding and Shasta Counties only night time homeless shelter, the Good News Rescue Mission is often full.

Driven to desperation with their back against the wall many homeless including veterans took refuge here in the Wells Fargo Depot over the years. Over the last 2 years it was locked  as 3 homeless who took refuge here have passed away.

Redding Loaves and Fishes Manager Pearle May Charged

Felony welfare fraud and perjury charges have been filed against the operations manager of Redding Loaves & Fishes, a Christian ministry food bank that feeds homeless people in Shasta County California.

Pearle Florence May, 51, of Redding, is charged with one felony count of aid by misrepresentation and 12 counts of perjury under oath, all felonies, according to the criminal complaint filed in late February in Shasta County Superior Court. Missing in America Veterans Project also operates out of that ministry.

The last resting place in Redding California for many of her Homeless Veterans.

No one who has served this Nation as Veterans in Redding and Shasta County California should ever be living on the streets homeless. Veterans make up one in four homeless people in the United States.

Homelessness is not just a problem among middle-age and elderly veterans. Younger veterans including women from Iraq and Afghanistan are trickling into shelters and soup kitchens seeking services, treatment or help with finding a job.
